In the last few months there have been numerous natural disasters and tragedies around the world and it seems as if a tide of hate and fear is rising.  As Christians we live with the knowledge and peace that Jesus will come back one day and make all things right and new, but for now we have to live on this broken earth where it can be so difficult to trust in the Lord and to persevere.

We at 4KIDS are immersed in the world of foster care—such a broken part of our already broken world.  The number of children in foster care is heartbreaking and the need for more foster families is increasing.  What do we do on the days when we feel powerless against the rising tide?

We must trust in the authority and power of God.    

This morning we discussed Ephesians 1:19-21, verses that describe the authority God has given Jesus over all things, as well as the power we as believes have through Christ.  The power God gave to Christ is “far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.” (v. 21).

God is clear that there is nothing and no one with more authority than Himself.  No corner of the universe unseen, no name unknown, no life ignored—God has authority over all.

As we studied these verses, one staff member shared her heart that the Lord offers his authority as protection for those who believe and also as a gift of love.  The power of the Lord wrapped around us is a shield and a comfort against the trials of the world.  She also shared that we need to exercise the authority God has given us; the “incomparably great power for us who believe.” (v. 19).

As we continue our day, week, month, and year caring for children in foster care and guiding foster families, we must remember the authority of the Lord.  There is not one child in care that He does not know every tiny detail about, from their deepest hurt to their greatest dream.  God knows all, and through Him we can exercise authority to share gentleness and peace with a tumultuous world.
