1HOPE for Kids Brings Equine Therapy to Foster Children

1HOPE for Kids Brings Equine Therapy to Foster Children

Children in foster care often come from traumatic backgrounds. At 1HOPE for Kids, we believe that building trust through connection leads to healing relationships. That's why we've partnered with equine-assisted therapy (EAT) providers to support our foster kids in the San Antonio area.

EAT is a unique form of therapy that builds patient connection and trust through its treatment program with horses.

Children who have experienced trauma can have a mental short circuit that only time and trust can heal. It takes a lot of courage to overcome fear and insecurities around a thousand pound animal. It can be scary getting on and riding a horse, knowing your control is minimal. Equine-assisted therapy helps children rebuild trust, first with horses, then with people.

We're proud to partner with three organizations offering EAT: Triple-H in Pipe Creek, Courage Ranch in Floresville, and Hopeful Acres in Seguin. Each has certified instructors and trainers to support children, adults, and families in their healing journey.

Studies have shown (also here, here, and here) that EAT can reduce symptoms of anxiety and post-traumatic stress in patients. We've seen these benefits firsthand: one of our foster children recently received 'horse hugs' during an EAT session, resulting in improved attitudes, relationships, and overall stability.

To support this initiative, we're participating in The Big Give, a 24-hour fundraising campaign from September 18-19. Our goal is to raise $40,000 to fund 50 EAT program scholarships for our foster children. Early donations are accepted from September 11. Please consider contributing at https://www.thebiggivesa.org/organizations/1hope to help provide this unique therapy experience for children in foster care. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on The Big Give and this campaign.

Your donation can help bridge the gap where state funds fall short, allowing us to provide excellent care for children in need through innovative therapies like EAT.
